Railways & Train Travel in Liguria

All you need to know about trains running in (or to and from) Liguria.

Italy's train service is run by Trenitalia, part of the Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato.

The Trenitalia website also gives access to services, such as hotel reservations, car hire reservations and ordering a taxi or a station porter for luggage assistance.

Information booklets with train times and destinations for local or longer trips are available in the stations and some tourist offices.

Trenitalia has a number of different trains:

  • Local trains: for regional transport
  • National trains: local connections to Italy's towns and cities with the Intercity (IC) trains, night connections along the country's main axes with the night trains, and fast connections with Eurostar Italia Trains (ES)
  • The high speed train, Eurostar, links Rome to Naples and runs between Milan and Turin
  • International trains: the Eurocity network provides 28 trains connecting Italy to France, Belgium, Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Day or night travel in Europe can take place on the Eurocity and Euronight trains.
Services for Disabled Passengers

Trenitalia provides specific services for disabled passengers, including those who are wheelchair-bound, mobility impaired and sight impaired.

  • 251 stations have Assistance Centres (C.A.D) to help disabled passengers

Italian residents who receive a mobility allowance are entitled to discount travel with a Carta Blue. This is also available to people with a temporary mobility problem. Special concessions and facilities exists for blind passengers and the person accompanying them.

Two equipped places are reserved for wheelchair passengers and their companions on the medium and long-distance trains. Extra help and assistance to get on and off may be provided on the trains marked with a special sign, and help on departure and arrival can be organised. 

Guide dogs of any size accompanying a blind person are allowed on trains and do not require a veterinarian's certification stating the animal does not carry any diseases or infestations. 

Business Passengers

Trenitalia provides specific services to passengers travelling for business, including:

  • Eurostar Club: access to waiting rooms equipped with computers, photocopiers and fax machines
  • Corporate Travel: discounts and deferred payments to company bookings
  • Carriage rental: booking trains for private use, work trips and meetings
Discount travel
  • Groups of at least six people travelling by train may benefit from specific reductions.
  • Families of three (two adults and one child under 12) parents pay full fare but the child free when they travel together

Traveling with Animals

In an attempt to control pests, as of 1 October 2008, only dogs and cats under 6 Kg are allowed on Trenitalia trains. These small animals may travel for free, but must be kept in a cage and must be accompanied by a certificate or statement from a veterinarian attesting to the fact that the animal does not carry any communicable diseases or infestations (of fleas, ticks, etc.). This certification should not have been issued more than three months before the travel date. If the animal does not have the accompanying certification, a fine will be payable.

Guide dogs of any size accompanying a blind person are allowed on any train and do not require a veterinarian's certification regarding diseases or infestations.

Genoa Train Stations

Genoa is a train hub and is well served by trains going to Milan, Turin, La Spezia, Pisa, Rome and Nice in France.

There are two main train stations:
